Departmental Goals for Student Learning Outcomes

Assessment for Oral and Written Communication

Assignments will teach the following skills:

WRITING ASSESSMENT

Freshman Year
Dan 107 – Introduction to Dance

  • Students will work with librarians and dance faculty to learn how to write reviews.
  • Students will write a review of a videotaped dance performance.
  • Students will write a review of one work observed from a live dance concert.

Sophomore Year
Dan 210 – Ballet, Past and Present

  • Students will write a review of a videotaped ballet performance. (Paris Opera Dances Diaghilev, containing four ballets, has been used in the past.)

ORAL COMMUNICATION ASSESSMENT

Freshman Year
Dan 107 – Introduction to Dance

  • Students will work with dance faculty and the Pearce Communication Center on preparing and presenting a 20-25 minute group oral presentation

Dan 210 – Ballet, Past and Present

  • Students will make a 30-minute presentation, which includes the following components: a written report, an oral presentation, and choreography.
