Writing to Learn
Writing is a powerful tool for learning. Writing is thinking, and writers often discover what they think and what they know (or do not know) through the process of writing.
Learning to Write At Columbia College, we are committed to preparing students to be competent writers, both in college and beyond. Once students graduate, they become part of a professional community and will be expected to understand the writing conventions of their profession. The dancer will need to know how to write a review. The historian will be called upon to explain an event in history. The teacher will write lesson plans, letters to parents, grant proposals, and progress reports.
Indeed, professional writing consultants frequently encounter employees—from engineers to state and federal workers to private business owners—who are shocked at the amount of writing their jobs demand. Regardless of her major, each student at Columbia College can expect the faculty in her department to prepare her to write as a professional in her field.
