Chaplin and Director of Church Relations


Position Purpose:
Columbia College recognizes its deep rooted history with the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church since its founding by the Conference at the Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia in 1854.  Today, the Columbia College espouses the spiritual expression and values of the Conference and appreciates the ongoing support of the Conference, its churches and members.
To enhance spiritual development for the greater good of both the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church and Columbia College and the Christian Mission they serve, the College is creating a Chaplain and Director of Church Relations. 

Position Summary:
The Director of Church Relations nurtures and fosters United Methodist values on the campus and expands the college’s relationship with the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.  This position is exempt.

Education, Experience and Skills:

  1. A seminary degree and United Methodist ordination as either a deacon or an elder
  2. A member of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church or the willingness to have a dual membership with her/his home conference and the South Carolina Conference
  3. Strong interpersonal, counseling, preaching and administrative skills
  4. Willingness to be proactive in contacting local United Methodist churches to tell the story of Columbia College’s beginnings
  5. Willingness to actively seek prospective students from United Methodist churches
  6. Willingness to actively seek support from the Conferences, churches and members
  7. Experience in campus ministry, college student development or inter-religious dialogue is desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities: The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

Chaplaincy
– (Approximate 40%).  Provides ministerial services and outreach to the students of Columbia College through:

  1. Oversee the weekly chapel  program
  2. Coordinate student religions organizations on campus which provide religious life services on campus, such as Campus Crusades, Heavenly Creations Gospel Choir, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Student Christian Association, Wesley-Luther Fellowship, Columbia College Catholic, Presbyterian Student Association and the Interfaith Council
  3. Encourage faculty and staff to engage in religious life via daily life, classrooms and programs
  4. Foster a stimulating environment on campus that is conducive to spiritual development in the context of Christian leadership and service
  5. Chair a religious life committee – To be determined
  6. Serve on the College Church Relations Committee

Church Relations - (Approximately 40%).
Develop a program that will place representation of Columbia College in Methodist Churches in South Carolina through:

  1. Speaking at various churches (1 to 2 times per month; 15 to 20 times per year.)
  2. Coordinate activity related to Methodist Student Sunday, a SCUMC program
  3. Coordinate volunteer speakers to represent Columbia College
  4. Coordinate student talent groups or individual to represent Columbia College at various churches, conferences or programs related to SCUMC
  5. Encourage support from individuals of SCUMC and seek possible sources of funding available for m the Conference, its churches or members
  6. Coordinate the appropriate stewardship associated with the support received from SCUMC apportionment

Coordinate with the admissions office activity related to student recruitment
Serve as the liaison between Columbia College and SCUMC
Represent Columbia College at the Annual Conference and other SCUMC related conferences and programs
Church and College Connections Leadership Outreach Director (Approximately 20%)

  1. Coordinate the activities associated with developing, promoting and delivering a series of workshops and conferences related to leadership development for churches, their staff and members
  2. Coordinate efforts with the Leadership Institute at Columbia College and the Board of the Laity Leadership Task Force of SCUMC to address opportunities and needs related to leadership
  3. Serve as a chair of a steering committee of members enlisted to support the development of a College Conference partnership in the area of leadership development
