Victim Advocate



Position Summary: Under occasional supervision, coordinates and performs all functions serving as the departmental representative to crime victims.  Maintains adequate communication and provides assistance to all Departmental employees, students, faculty, staff and visitors.  Assists in all duties assigned by the Chief of Police and senior management.  The Victim Advocate position is part time with benefits working at least 28.5 hours per week.

Education, Experience, And Skills Required:

  1. Associates degree preferred.
  2. Prefer experience dealing with crime victims, grants or law enforcement related organizations.
  3. Experience in self-defense, RADS, or like training a plus.
  4. Must have valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  5. Must be able to work on-call, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  6. Must have an open, non-judgmental attitude towards victims/survivors.
  7. Must complete victim advocate certification training, approximately 40 hours in length for South Carolina.
  8. Must pass NCIC, National Crime Information Center certification.
  9. Be able to cope with emotional and stressful situations.
  10. Ability to communicate well, think well, and respond quickly.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs all necessary, required and appropriate administrative duties including but not limited to:

  1. Provides information to victims concerning the procedures of the criminal justice system.
  2. Assists investigators with interviews of victims and/or witness.
  3. Maintains contact with victims to coordinate court appearances and meetings.
  4. Escorts victims to courtroom, and acclimatizes them for their participation in the criminal justice system.
  5. Keeps victims apprised of the status and disposition of cases.
  6. Conducts educational presentations on the Victim Services Program for community groups and schools; maintains case and institutional advocacy statistics.
  7. Develops resources in regards to grant funding, and applies for and maintains any grant monies.
  8. Additionally, serves in an administrative capacity assisting senior management with other duties as required enhancing services provided to the College.
  9.  Performs computer data entry to record and retrieve departmental information.
  10. Assists with other Departmental operations as necessary.
  11. Provides general public information and assistance as required.
  12. Must attend monthly SART, Sexual Assault Response Team meetings.
  13. Must observe and learn the Communications Center.
