Child & Family Studies

The Child and Family Studies major at Columbia College was created in 2000 to address the growing needs of children and families, and reflects an advocacy role for children, families, and communities.

The major is popular with students who are interested in people, their interactions and relationships, and the environment and life. Coursework is designed to give students an understanding of human dynamics from both academic and practical experiences.

Child and Family Studies majors are required to write a senior research paper that involves creating a research question, reviewing appropriate literature, designing a research project, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting results and conclusions. Additionally, they are required to successfully complete a practicum field placement during the second semester of their senior year. This experience provides majors with an excellent blend of academic and practical experience prior to professional employment or graduate school.
