Human Services (Evening College only)

The B.A. in Human Services prepares students to help people meet basic physical and emotional needs. They often go on to assist professionals such as social workers or to become professionals themselves.

A typical human services major is someone who is intelligent, compassionate, resourceful and wishes to pursue a helping profession such as social work, counseling, psychotherapy or teaching. You'll enjoy this major if you desire to help people from various backgrounds that face challenges ranging from teen pregnancy to life-threatening illness. Human services majors receive the academic preparation and hands-on training required for lifelong careers in one of hundreds of fulfilling jobs that seek to bring about a positive change in society, as well as in individuals and families. A human services professional may provide direct services to clients, supervise personnel, administer programs and develop policies.

Requirements

In order to declare a Human Services major, the student must have an Associates Degree in Human Services from a regionally accredited two year college and a cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Emphasis

Students may choose to emphasize in Counseling or Community and Organizational Leadership.

Minor in Organizational Leadership, Advocacy and Social Justice (Women’s and Evening)

The purpose of the minor in Organizational Leadership, Advocacy, and Social Justice is to provide students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills that will better prepare them for careers in public and nonprofit agencies such as United Way Affiliated Agencies, charitable foundations such as the Sisters of Charity and the Susan Koman Foundation, private nonprofit organizations such as the SC School Improvement Councils and SC Fair Share, as well as other philanthropic organizations such as March of Dimes, the Heart Association etc.
