Columbia College’s commitment to integrating technology into a liberal arts curriculum is particularly beneficial for students within the Department of Mathematics.
The department is located in the Barbara Bush Center for Science and Technology. This exceptional state-of-the-art facility provides students with outstanding opportunities for advanced scientific study. In addition to student/faculty research laboratories, the Center also features 600 data ports throughout the building and on the mall outside where students can access the campus computer network and the World Wide Web via laptop computers.
The mathematics curriculum provides students with opportunities to practice the art of logical reasoning, the skills of problem solving, the joy of collaborative work, and the appropriate use of technology.
Coursework in mathematics required beyond calculus includes:
The computer information systems curriculum provides students with the theory, analysis, design and implementation of processes that manipulate and transform information. Courses include a year of programming in an objected-oriented language, systems analysis and design, database management, and choices from networking, web design and other applications. An internship if required for this major.
Teaching Philosophy
The department strives to prepare its majors for success in their future careers in industry, business, or education, or in their pursuit of a graduate degree. Mathematics majors at Columbia College have gone into varies areas of graduate study, including mathematics, computer science, education, law, and audiology. Graduates who have certified to teach are high sought after as mathematics teachers in school districts in South Carolina and beyond.
Our faculty believe in a philosophy of teaching that values collaborative and individual work, the application and use of technology, and modeling of real phenomena. All classes provide opportunities for students to work together to develop collaborative and communication skills that are in great demand in today's workplace.
The department has embraced the use of technology in all courses to enhance students' understanding of complex principles. Faculty members believe that modeling authentic data makes the application of difficult concepts readily accessible to students.
Individual independent study courses are also offered as needed by our students. In addition, a required capstone course, Historical Topics Seminar, taken during the senior years provides students with the opportunity to investigate the history and development of certain mathematical ideas.
Secondary Education Certification
For students who wish to certify to teach secondary mathematics, the department offers an innovative program of pre-service preparation, which includes opportunities to attend and present workshops at state and local conferences and enroll in on-site teacher education methods courses.
Math Proficiency and Math Placement
Mathematics placement for entering freshmen is determined by SAT scores and academic record. Transfer students and students with no SAT scores need to take the Mathematics Department placement/proficiency test for placement to enroll in any mathematics course.
Passing a mathematics course above 100 satisfies the mathematics proficiency requirement at Columbia College. For a student with transfer credits in mathematics from another college or university, proficiency may be satisfied by passing the proficiency test given by the Mathematics Department.
Math Lab
Located in Room 126 of the Barbara Bush Center for Science and Technology, the Math Lab serves as a vital resource for Columbia College students. The lab provides a supportive learning environment for students who need mathematical assistance outside the classroom.
The Math Lab directors and student workers are available to assist both day and Evening College students for numerous hours during the week, including evening and some weekend hours. The Math Lab also provides access to computers, calculators and other resource materials for student use while in the lab. Most student workers are mathematics majors or minors.
A variety of assistance is offered through the Math Lab. Students may use the lab as a source for guidance with homework problems and class projects. However, the lab is chiefly used by students enrolled in Math 001, students who need remediation for Columbia College's mathematics proficiency requirement, and students who require remediation for the Praxis I exam.
The directors of the Math Lab are Dr. Amelia Kinard and Jestine Odom.
