Department of Music Mission Statement
Music, like all the arts is both a reflection of society and an enhancement of the quality of life. The mission of the Department of Music is to provide opportunities for each student to develop the capacity for critical thinking, creative expression, and committed leadership. By opening the doors for each student to develop as a music leader, we help create an informed public that will in turn, enrich the human experience for all.
All students who major in music are encouraged to become leaders in the art of music. Whether they are performing in seminar, on student recital, or in an ensemble production, developing their talent through the discipline of practice, studying supporting music courses, volunteering their musical services on or off campus, or presenting their final capstone experience, students are demonstrating that they are courageous, committed, confident, and competent.
The Department of Music has been fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1972.
Graduates include professional performers, professors, church musicians, recognized teaching professionals, and arts management specialists.
Students in the music program are guided by faculty with diverse educational backgrounds, and the program’s annual master classes in voice and piano are taught by some of America’s greatest artists. Professional artists also direct opera scenes and a major opera/musical production each year.
The Department of Music is housed in the R. Wright Spears Music/Art Center, which offers rehearsal and practice rooms, private studios, a listening room, concert hall and the latest in computer-based instruction in music. Special features include a Brewster harpsichord, a Casavant-Frerres mechanical pipe organ, and several concert grand Steinway pianos.
