As a United Methodist Church-affiliated college, Columbia College has a tradition of emphasizing spiritual values as part of a holistic education.
Through the department of religion and philosophy, students have the opportunity to explore a variety of religious topics, from the life and teachings of Jesus, women in religion, and Christian ethics to biblical visions of the future, women in the Bible, and Christian education in the local church.
The bachelor of arts in religion program offers students the most freedom to select courses with the greatest personal appeal. The department strives to acquaint students with fundamental religious and ethical issues which confront humanity and to present some of the more important solutions.
The bachelor of arts in religion with an emphasis in christian education prepares students to serve local churches as Christian educators or to pursue seminary or graduate school in Christian education or a related field. Persons who complete the major meet the academic requirements for undergraduate professional certification in The United Methodist Church.
Six of the required courses for the major are offered in conjunction with
an online program that delivers Web-based instruction for Christian educators. Students meet face-to-face at the beginning and end of each online course. All other course instruction takes place in classroom and practicum settings.
