John Zubizarreta and honors students Alex Bowen, Tara Dennis, and Hannah Hancock received significant attention for an outstanding presentation at the recent Association of American Colleges & Universities national convention in Washington, D.C., 24-26 January 2008. The AAC&U is one of the most prestigious professional organizations in American higher education dedicated to the value of liberal-arts learning. The conference is normally loaded with presidents, provosts, deans, and some faculty. Student presenters are virtually unheard of at the meeting, but our students raised plenty of eyebrows with their excellent preparation, substantive ideas, and impressive presentation skills. At the conference, the AAC&U launched a new network television channel, and WebsEdge, the London-based producers, interviewed and filmed Dr. Zubizarreta and the students for a special broadcast about their work with reflective learning portfolios. In addition, the Women’s College Coalition caught wind of Columbia College’s exposure at the AAC&U event and highlighted the college in its latest national newsletter.

In addition to his work with students, Dr. Zubizarreta was elected in January as Vice-President and rising President of the National Collegiate Honors Council, the premier professional association for honors education in the United States and abroad. He will serve as conference organizer and chair for the 2009 convention in Washington, D.C.
