The Columbia College Medallion was commissioned in 1979 by the Board of Trustees in conjunction with the observance of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the College. The institution’s highest honor, the Medallion is presented annually to those individuals whom the College wishes to recognize for exceptional accomplishments, leadership, and service.

Recipients of the Medallion are inducted into the James Milton Ariail Society, named for the distinguished professor of English who taught at Columbia College from 1912 until 1972 and who served as professor emeritus until his death in 1976.
