Spelman President to Speak at Convocation

(COLUMBIA, SC) Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of Spelman College, will serve as the keynote speaker at Columbia College's 2004-2005 Convocation Wednesday, September 22, 1:00 p.m., in College Place United Methodist Church.

This special event will commemorate the opening of the academic year and the College's 150th anniversary, or sesquicentennial. The public is invited to attend the event at no cost.

A native of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Tatum is a graduate of Wesleyan University and holds master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan. Before coming to Spelman, she was acting president of Mount Holyoke College, where she also held positions as dean and professor. Prior to that, she was an associate professor at Westfield State College and a lecturer at the University of California-Santa Barbara. Her expertise includes black families in white America, racial identity in teens, and race in the classroom. In 1997, she authored a critically-acclaimed book, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race.
