First Year Project Receives National Commendation

 

(COLUMBIA, SC) Columbia College has received a national commendation for its participation as a partner in the "Foundations of Excellence" project sponsored by the Policy Center on the First Year of College and Penn State University's Center for the Study of Higher Education.

As one of 12 Founding Institutions selected to participate in the project, Columbia College helped develop a model of excellence for the first college year to be used by small, private colleges across the country in refining their overall approach to educating new students.

In a proclamation issued by the sponsoring organizations and the Council of Independent Colleges, Columbia College was cited for its "commitment to enhancing excellence" and for its "exemplary service.”

John N. Gardner, executive director of the Policy Center on the First Year of College, recently presented the proclamation to Dr. Vivia Lawton Fowler, director of general education and the R. Wright Spears Professor of Religion at Columbia College,

The “Foundations of Excellence” project was funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies and the Lumina Foundation for Education.
