College Unveils New Logo

(COLUMBIA, SC) As part of its Sesquicentennial celebration during the 2004-2005 academic year, Columbia College has unveiled a new institutional logo.

The design of the new logo incorporates "The Columns," a prominent campus landmark and highlights the founding of the College in 1854. The Columns were erected in 1979 with a contribution from alumna "Alawee" Gibson Tucker of Pageland, S.C., Class of 1939. Standing in a shaded corner of the campus, they represent the Columns of Old Main, at one time the College's most prominent building. Old Main was constructed in 1910 and destroyed by fire in 1964. On the morning after the fire, only the white columns of the grand structure remained standing amid the ashes. Since that time, columns have symbolized the strength and endurance of Columbia College.

"We are excited to unveil this new image for the College as we enter our Sesquicentennial year," said President Caroline Whitson. "Columns are a proud symbol of our heritage that have great meaning to both our oldest alumnae and our newest students."

The College's Sesquicentennial will include activites and events throughout the year that will be announced as they occur.
