Dept. of English to Present "Shakespeare on Stage"

(COLUMBIA, SC) The Columbia College Department of English will sponsor "Shakespeare on Stage 2004: An Evening of Song, Sonnets and Scenes" on Tuesday, October 12, 7:30 p.m., in Cottingham Theatre.

The event is free and open to the public.  There will also be a free reception afterwards in the lobby of the Breed Leadership Center.

Students, faculty, and staff -- along with a few off-campus guests -- will perform selections illustrating how William Shakespeare captured the complexities of the human spirit. Characters will include Juliet, Cleopatra, King Lear, and several Merry Wives of Windsor. The program will also feature selections from Shakespeare-inspired operas and musicals.

The program is the brainchild of student Evelyn Clary, who, while taking a Shakespeare class in fall 2003, found that her mother, as a student, had composed a piece for voice and piano based on text from "The Tempest." Clary and her mother premiered the piece on campus last year and connected as artists.

"Whether you love Shakespeare or hate him," says Clary, "you cannot deny his impact on literature, theatre, and music. He masterfully created very human characters that have captured the attention of artists through the years."
