(COLUMBIA, SC) Dr. John Zubizarreta, Columbia College professor of English and director of honors and faculty development, has published The Learning Portfolio: Reflective Practice for Improving Student Learning (Anker Publishing, 2003). The book offers readers both an academic understanding of and a rationale for learning portfolios -- documents that engage students in continuous, thoughtful analysis of their learning.
A native of New York City who joined the faculty of Columbia College in 1988, Zubizarreta holds a B.A. degree from Florida International University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina.
He has been the recipient of the Carnegie Foundation/Council for the Advancement and Support of Education "Professor of the Year for South Carolina" award; the IBM/Public Broadcasting System International Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology; the S.C. Governor's Distinguished Professor Award; the Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award; the National United Methodist Church Board of Higher Education Exemplary Teacher Award; and The South Atlantic Association of Departments of English Outstanding Teacher Award.
He is president of the Southern Regional Honors Council, immediate past president of the American Culture/Popular Culture Association in the South, and a member of the executive committee of the National Collegiate Honors Council.
Zubizarreta previously published, with English department colleague Dr. Nancy Tuten, The Robert Frost Encyclopedia (Greenwood Press, 2001).
