Columbia College Announces MLK Day Activities

(COLUMBIA, SC) Columbia College has announced the following activities and events in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 17. 

All events are free and open to the public.

A MORNING OF DIALOGUE

8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. - "Eyes on the Prize"
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 103)
A six-episode documentary on the American Civil Rights Movement, including rare film footage and incisive present-day interviews.

8:30-9:30 a.m. - "From Behind the Mask"
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 101)
A celebration of the heroic story of Rev. Joseph A. DeLaine and his family as they led the fight against segregated schools in Clarendon County, S.C.  

8:30-9:30 a.m. - "The Influence of MLK in Latin America" 
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 104)
A discussion of the use of Martin Luther King Jr.'s non-violent protest philosophy in developing stragegy for change in Latin America.

9:45-10:45 a.m. - "Hands-on Art Experience"
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 101)
A slide lecture on sculptural monuments, with specific reference to African American art, followed by individual and group work to create monuments to ideas, events or occasions.

9:45-10:45 a.m. - "The Principle of Privilege: Legacy of Self-Deception"
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 102)
Instruments and exercises will be used to help participants examine their belief systems and their actions regarding issues of race and gender.

9:45-10:45 a.m. - "Theology of Liberation: Dr. Martin Luther King's Role"
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 104)
An exploration of the roots and tenets of liberation theology, comparing them with Dr. King's theological roots and ideologies.

11 a.m.-12 noon - "The Sounds of the Sixties: Music that Moved the People"
(Concert Hall, Spears Music/Art Center)
Students from the Columbia College Department of Music will present a program representing the sounds of the sixties.

11 a.m.-12 noon - "Understanding African American Oratory"
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 101)
Students from an African American Rhetoric course will discuss various approaches to understanding African American oratory.

11 a.m.-12 noon - "Daring to be Different: Taking a Stand for My Sisters"
(Breed Leadership Center, Room 104)
An interactive discussion of the motivation and participation of white women in the Civil Rights Movement.

AN AFTERNOON OF SERVICE

1-5 p.m. - Potato Drop
(Morgan Street, in front of Asbury Residence Hall)
Approximately 150 students, faculty and staff will bag an entire truckload of potatoes, supplied by the Society of St. Andrews, for the benefit of Harvest Hope Food Bank. Sponsored by Columbia College Serves and the Office of the Chaplain.

AN EVENING OF REMEMBRANCE

5:30-6:30 p.m. - MLK Day Closing Ceremony
(On the mall in front of the Barbara Bush Center for Science & Technology)
A candlelight ceremony in honor of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement, including a performance by The Heavenly Creations Gospel Choir and presentations by winners of a Student Speech Contest. Sponsored by the African American Student Association.
