Friday Receives Savory Scholar Award

(COLUMBIA, SC) Columbia College sophomore Amanda Friday, a social work and political science major from Spartanburg, S.C., recently received the College's 2004 Savory PURL Scholarship Award.

The prestigious endowed annual award, named for late professor and dean Dr. Jerold J. Savory, provides highly selective, competitive funding for collaborative undergraduate research mentored by a Columbia College teacher-scholar. Friday’s mentor is Dr. Joyce W. Fields, assistant professor of child and family studies.

Friday and Fields plan to study the development of racial/ethnic, gender, and age stereotypes in children and the effects of such stereotypes on their perception of others. Their collaborative research will use art as a medium for collecting and analyzing information.

"The Savory award represents the high standards and intellectual engagement of a community dedicated to academic excellence," says Dr. John Zubizarreta, director of honors and faculty development. “We are proud of Amanda and Dr. Fields for their commitment to substantive research and student-faculty collaboration.”
