COLUMBIA, SC: Jennifer “Buffy” Murphy, the 2007 South Carolina Teacher of the Year, will speak at Columbia College on November 14, 2006. A fifth-grade teacher at Irmo Elementary School in School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, Murphy is a product of that school district. Murphy earned the prestigious National Board Certification in 2004 in early and middle childhood literacy. She is widely known for her innovative approach to teaching and has served as a national and state presenter on subjects ranging from literacy to classroom technology.
As State Teacher of the Year for the 2006-07 school year, Murphy is participating in a yearlong residency at the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA) and represents South Carolina's 50,000 teachers. She is a certified evaluator and coaching teacher for pre-service MAT graduate student interns and undergraduate practicum students. As a clinical adjunct for the University of South Carolina's Professional Development School Network, she works to enhance the knowledge and skills of pre-service and in-service educators.
