Shorts 2006 is an evening of five brief plays, including works by American playwrights Shel Silverstein, Mary Louise Wilson, and the pseudonymous Jane Martin of the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The plays, most of which are about ten minutes in length, present variations on contemporary women dealing with life in highly unique, often laugh-out-loud funny ways.
In Silverstein's All Cotton, a woman requests a refund because her guaranteed-not-to-shrink blouse has shrunk six sizes. When the thoroughly unhelpful store clerk refuses, she goes to supernatural lengths to make her point. Lost by Mary Louise Wilson tells of two women of uncertain age who discover that they've lost more than their memories. In Jane Martin's Beauty, a woman who finds a magic lamp on a beach must choose between wishing for money or beauty. The Popcorn Sonata by Jenny Lyn Bader is about a busy working mother and her too-perfect babysitter. And The Role of Della by John J. Wooten is a comic take on two actresses auditioning for the same role.
Shorts 2006 is directed by guest director Indira Cureton-Cummings, with Wayne Bradley of the Department of Communication and Theatre as technical director and Mitra Arthur, a senior from Upper Marlboro, MD, as stage manager.
Performing in Shorts 2006 are Columbia College students Lakita Ashford, a first-year student from Columbia; LaTanya Castellano, a sophomore from Oxford, MS; Christina Craven, a senior from Blythewood, SC; Amanda Dunn, a first-year student from Goose Creek, SC; Shavone Gadsden, a senior from Charleston, SC; Angel McCrea, a senior from Cayce, SC; Frances Nichols, a junior from Rock Hill, SC; Jessi Perry, a senior from Columbia; Jennifer Pineau, a senior from Lugoff, SC; Zarah Setro, a sophomore from Honea Path, SC; and Tiffany Talley, a senior from Charleston, SC.
