Hesed House of Columbia College, The Columbia College Music Department and the Columbia Jewish Cultural Arts Jewish Music Series are pleased to co-sponsor a piano recital featuring renowned Israeli pianist Allan Sternfield on Thursday, January 25, 7:30 pm in the Spears Music/Art Center Concert Hall.
The concert is one of a series of events commemorating International Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27. Sternfield will perform works by 19th and 20th Century Jewish composers including composers who perished in the Terezin concentration camp. A reception will be held immediately following the concert and attendees are invited to meet the artist, enjoy refreshments and view the current exhibit in the adjoining Goodall Gallery.
For Columbia College music students, Sternfield will also offer a master class on Wednesday, January 24, at 3:30, also in the Concert Hall. For more information about the master class, contact Dr. Alan Weinberg (x. 3718).
Allan Sternfield was born in the United States and studied at the Peabody Conservatory. Since moving to Israel in 1976, Allan Sternfield has been active in the musical life there, appearing as soloist with orchestras, in chamber music concerts, in solo recitals and on the radio. In addition to his wide and varied classical repertoire he also performs Israeli and American piano music, as well as works by composers who were killed in the Holocaust (Klein, Ullman, Schulhof, Haas and others). Sternfield has been on the faculty of The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance <http://www.jmd.ac.il/> since 1976.
Sternfield has performed extensively in the United States, Europe, Israel, South America and the Far East, and has recorded a wide variety of solo repertoire, chamber music, and concerti for radio stations in Scandinavia, Israel, Hong Kong and Western and Eastern Europe (including live and recorded recitals for the BBC).
Critics have warmly praised his “artistic maturity, interpretive powers, and skill” (The Japan Times), “his impeccable technical resources and musical approach beyond reproach” (The Jerusalem Post), his “complete mastery” (The Daily Telegraph, London).
The Columbia College Concert Hall is located in the Spears Music and Art Center in downtown Columbia on North Main Street, 1301 Columbia College Drive.
