Wrenn Cook Honored by SC Dance Association

Wrenn Cook has been selected to receive the 2007-08 South Carolina Dance Association Honor Award, the highest award given by the association. The panel selected Cook for her "dedication to advancing the arts in South Carolina," stating that she has "forged the way for many generations of dance educators and advocates." The award will be presented at the annual SC Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance convention at Myrtle Beach in November.

Cook serves as chair of the Columbia College dance department and is director of the South Carolina Center for Dance and Arts Education (SCCDE).  A Columbia native, Cook has an extensive background as a professional modern dancer, performing in companies based in Columbia, Philadelphia, and New York.

Since 1989, Cook has been active in curriculum development and in arts education initiatives at the state level. She has co-authored dance curriculum guides for Richland Districts One and Two, and served on the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Framework writing team. She has served on a number of South Carolina Department of Education panels, and the Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Steering Committee, and she currently serves on the boards of the South Carolina Dance Association, the South Carolina Arts Alliance, and is Chair-elect of the South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education. In 1999, she was appointed by the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee to serve on a task force to develop the arts education portion on the school and district report cards.

Cook also has written and implemented over twenty grant projects with funds awarded by the South Carolina Department of Education, the South Carolina Arts Commission, and the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties. She became director of the SCCDE in 2000.
