Goodall Gallery, Columbia College

The Goodall Gallery at Columbia College will present its second Annual South Carolina Art Teachers Invitational Exhibition.  The group exhibition features ten South Carolina art educators covering a wide variety of media and content.  The exhibit opens January 4 and continues through February 4, 2008, with an artists’ reception on Friday, January 18, from 5:30-7pm.
 
The annual exhibition highlights art educators who actively pursue their own artistic endeavors.  The artists this year include:  Angel Allen, Cardinal Newman High School; Robin Boston, Stratford High School;  Jim Campbell, Fine Arts Center of Greenville;  Jackie Chalfant, Spring Valley High School (retired);  Rusty Jewell, Easley High School;  Karen Mixon, Airport High School;  Carlee Myers;  Lexington High School;  Alvin Staley, Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School;  Carlyn Tucker,  South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities;  and Carol Washburn, Chapin High School.  A wide variety of media will be shown, including mosaic, sculpture, painting, mixed media and photography.
 
Behind every art teacher there is an artist.  While working hard as educators, these individuals also remain practicing artists outside the classroom.  They draw from inspirations each and every artist experiences in their moments of creativity.  While those moments create the artist, they also influence the teacher: “I can’t think of a better way to improve one’s art than teaching it . . . in building and teaching the language of art, the student and teacher become much more aware of the reasons behind the successes and the failures” says Angel Allen from Cardinal Newman High School.  The result of such creative making and giving can be seen within the works of this exhibition, proving that for these individuals artistic growth doesn’t stop at the end of the day. Instead, it evolves and comes full circle, enriching the artist-teacher and future generations of artists to come.
 
The Columbia College Goodall Gallery is located in the Spears Music and Art Center in downtown Columbia on North Main Street, 1301 Columbia College Drive.  Gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.   For further information about exhibits please contact Jackie Adams at (803) 786-3088.
