Ruth Anne Reeves O'Cain '94,
Young Alumna Award 2008
A second generation Columbia College graduate, Ruth Anne Reeves O'Cain
'94 has served as a class agent and member of the Alumnae Council since
graduation. She has served on several committees including alumnae
weekend, campus relations, alumnae connections and admissions
volunteers. After earning her undergraduate degree in early childhood
education, she went on to earn a master's degree in library science from
the University of South Carolina. Currently she is a full-time mother
and homemaker, and regularly volunteers with her children's schools and
often serves as a substitute teacher. She is also the Dorchester county
Farm Bureau Women's Chair, and supports educational programs for
children, youth and adults regarding the history and importance of
agricultural industry in South Carolina. She has been honored for seven
consecutive years for her outstanding contributions to this county
organization. Ruth Anne and her family are members of Reevesville
Baptist Church, where she serves as a worship leader, Sunday school
teacher, mission team leader and dedicated volunteer. The Reeves family
established an endowed scholarship in honor of Ruth Anne and her mother,
Anne Kizer Reeves '63. Ruth Anne and her husband Michael reside in St.
George, S.C., and have three children, Benjamin, Mary Ellis, and Anna.
Julieanne LeJeune Humowitz '92,
Wil Lou Gray Outstanding Educator Award
2008
Julieanne LeJeune Humowitz '92 is a nationally certified teacher and
serves as department chair for social studies at Waccamaw High School in
Pawleys Island, S.C. Julieanne earned her master's degree in elementary
education from Coastal Carolina University and holds an educational
leadership certification from The Citadel. Julieanne has been recognized
as Teacher of the Year three times since 1994 and has received numerous
honors for her roles as advisor, leader and educator. Most recently, she
was honored as Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Winyah
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and as State
Advisor of the Year by the South Carolina Student Council Association.
She is a mentor to new teachers and serves on ADEPT state certification
evaluation committees. Julieanne resides in Georgetown, S.C., with her
husband Paul and their three children, Christine, Tess, and Luke.
Barbara Courtney Thomas '57,
Distinguished Service Award 2008
Barbara Courtney Thomas '57 is among the most active of class presidents
ever elected at Columbia College. Dedicated to keeping close touch with
her beloved classmates, she has helped coordinate and attended every
reunion and annual luncheon for the Class of 1957. Her recently
published novel Just Pick Up the Pieces includes Barbara's first
impression of Columbia College from her unique perspective as a child
who resided at Epworth Children's Home. Barbara earned her master's
degree in elementary education from the University of South Carolina and
taught sixth grade in the Lexington Five district from 1957 until her
retirement in 1994. She was honored four times as Teacher of the Year by
her schools and district. She has been an active member of Salem United
Methodist Church for forty-five years, serving as frequent volunteer and
committee member. Currently, she also serves as a member of the Columbia
College Alumnae Council and is a member of the Ariail Columbia College
Club. She resides with her husband Norman in Chapin, S.C., and they have
three children, Gayle, Pam and Clark.
LaTisha Gotell Faulks '96,
Career Achievement Award 2008
LaTisha Gotell Faulks '96 majored in political science at Columbia
College and earned her juris doctorate from Rutgers University School of
Law in 1999. An exceptionally gifted student throughout her academic
career, she now teaches as an assistant professor of law at North
Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham, N.C.. Prior to
joining the faculty at NCCUS, LaTisha served as a visiting associate
professor at Texas Wesleyan University, was a senior staff attorney with
the Center for Capital Litigation in Columbia, S.C., and held positions
with firms located in Washington, D.C., and New Jersey.
