The Columbia College Dance Company will sponsor Creativity for the Cure, a benefit concert for breast cancer research. The concert will be held on Friday, October 3, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. in Cottingham Theatre on the Columbia College campus. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the American Cancer Society. The benefit will feature a diverse selection of contemporary and jazz dances by various choreographers from around the state. General admission is $10, and for students and seniors is $5.
The concert has been organized by Greenville native Katie Jenkins, a dance major at Columbia College, in fulfillment of her senior leadership semester project. She chose to produce a concert that would benefit breast cancer research because the disease has directly affected her family. Jenkins’ grandmother is a two-time breast cancer survivor.
In talking about her inspiration for the event, Jenkins stated, “As long as I have known my grandmother, she has been nothing but strong and caring. I have never seen her weak, probably because she wanted to hide it from us grandchildren. She is a strong leader who has succeeded in my eyes. For my grandmother, family comes first and she deserves to be recognized. I want to show women that standing tall and fighting against breast cancer is worth every painful day of the battle. My grandmother was able to defeat breast cancer and watch me become the woman I am today.”
