National Beauty Industry Advisor to Speak
April 28, 2008
The Columbia College Honors Association has been working on a year-long service project to advocate for women’s health and support women who are currently undergoing cancer treatment. Project Hair Care culminates with a community hair donation drive to be held April 28, 2008, on the Columbia College campus, on the outdoor “mall” area between Edens Library and Daniel Hall, between 1:30-5:30 p.m. In case of rain, the activities will move indoors. Donors will be eligible for a giveaway of several prize baskets. This event is a free community event!
If you would like to donate, your hair must be a minimum of 8 inches long (measured from just above the elastic band of the ponytail to the ends). All hair types are needed, but it must not be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated. Visit www.projecthaircare.com for more information.
Participants will donate their pony tails for use in creating natural hair wigs for patients who have suffered hair loss due to cancer treatment. The hair collected during the event will go to the national cancer awareness initiative called “Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths.” Family and friends supporting the donors are also welcome to cheer them on!
Professional hair cuts will be provided for hair donors by the Association of Cosmetology Salon Professionals. The event promises to be fun for children and adults, with popcorn, cotton candy, drinks, music, and a used book sale. Cardinal Newman students will display art inspired by hair. Informational and educational materials will be available to promote cancer awareness.
Special guest Beth Hickey will be in attendance at the event and will present a "Lesson in Leadership" in the Breed Leadership Center, room 201-202, at 6pm. Her presentation will last one hour and will focus on women in business. Beth Hickey is a 20-year veteran and licensed cosmetologist, beauty industry advisor and product development consultant to manufacturers and distributors, both nationally and internationally.
