Columbia College is pleased to announce that Global Lens 2008 comes to Columbia venues starting in August and running through December. Weekly screenings at Columbia College begin Sunday, September 14. See below for the complete schedule.
Global Lens 2008, a program of the Global Film Initiative based in San Francisco, was founded to promote cross-cultural understanding through cinema. The Global Lens series features ten narrative features selected for authentic voice, strong production values and unique cultural perspective. Approximately forty theatrical locations across the United States and Canada are participating.
Nickelodeon Theatre leads the local collaborative effort, which includes several partners who will promote and screen the series. Each film will be offered at least twice in different venues around Columbia at no charge to the public.
Larry Hembree, Executive Director of the Nickelodeon, says, “This is powerful and provocative work from around the world that is also critically acclaimed. We are fortunate to be able to offer public screenings at no cost.”
Other partners include USC’s Walker Institute of International and Area Studies, Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia College, Monday Lunch Group, Columbia Council for Internationals, Palmetto Council for International Visitors and USC’s English Programs for Internationals.
Dr. Ute Wachsmann-Linnan, Associate Professor of Art History and Director of Global Studies at Columbia College, adds, “Columbia College welcomes this opportunity to collaborate with so many important cultural and global organizations in the city.”
Films to be screened are All For Free (Croatia), The Bet Collector (Philippines), Bunny Chow (South Africa), The Custodian (Argentina), The Fish Fall in Love (Iran), Kept & Dreamless (Argentina), The Kite (Lebanon) and Let the Wind Blow (India), Luxury Car (China) and Opera Jawa (Indonesia).
