Two Communication students, Cortnee Love and Jennifer McGriff, are finalists for the Carolinas Communication Association's Mary E. Jarrard Undergraduate Student Paper Award Competition. Both students will present their papers at CCA's annual convention in Wilmington, N.C., held the last weekend of September.
The winner will be announced at a luncheon September 26. Cortnee's paper, "Mean Girls: Relational Aggression Affects on Communication" examines the way media portrays aggression between girls, looking specifically at the film "Mean Girls" as a case-study. Jennifer's paper, "On The Pulse of Morning: Inaugural Usage of Neo-Aristotelian and Afrocentric Approach," examines how two rhetorical analytical approaches can work together to critically analyze Maya Angelou's poem as a mode of political, social, and moral persuasion. Both papers grew out of classes taught by Dr. Jason Munsell. Dr. Munsell will also be attending and presenting at the conference, as well as presiding as president of the association.
