Fall Choreographer Showcase 2009

Friday, Dec 4, & Saturday, Dec 5
7:30pm, Cottingham Theatre

The Columbia College Dance Company will present its annual Fall Choreographer Showcase on Friday and Saturday, December 4th and 5th , at 7:30pm in Cottingham Theatre. The concert will include student choreography from Jennifer Becker, Jessica Hale, Meredith Jenkins, Jillene Forde, Megan Saylors, Lucy Considine, Shellie Robert and Amanda Ling.

Jennifer Becker and Jessica Hale will be presenting Want of Wonder where two people find themselves wanting freedom from the dependency of their relationship but worry because of their fears of failure and feelings for each other.

Meredith Jenkins will be presenting Beyond Proximity. She states "sometimes it seems a goal is unattainable; sometimes, it seems that you have to jump through a thousand hoops to get closer to that goal. Sometimes the closer you get, the more you may find that what you have been striving for may not be what you wanted after all."

Jillene Forde's dance, Oshay, which means "thank you" is a piece which hails the coming of the sun as the source of light and life after a period of darkness. Set to tradition African drumming ("Transe" by Guem), the piece is a fusion of African, Caribbean and Contemporary movements. She states, "Oshay is a tribute to my native Trinidad and Tobago in celebration of 47 years of Independence."

Megan Saylor's dance, Sunday Morning is a piece that explores how the human life is comprised of millions of moments, most seemingly minute but in actuality create the basis of our time, psyche, and memory. The music is titled "Fish in the Sea" by Madeline.

Lucy Considine has choreographed Malleable Detainment, a piece that recognizes the idea of what can detain someone, whether it is physical or mental.

Shellie Robert will be presenting Listen to Them with inspiration from dancers Lauren Miller, Shannon Bradberry and herself. She states, "all of my inspiration for this dance came from playing around and having fun in the studio."

Amanda Ling has choreographed Deviant Bows. The movement for this piece was inspired by a fascination with the elbow. The dancers in this piece find themselves being controlled by their elbows as they investigate this pointy body part. The music is by the Gorillaz.
