The Columbia College Department of History and Political Science and The Feminization of Violence and Gang Membership Symposium announce a CALL FOR PAPERS on the topic: Policy Initiative to Stop Gang Membership and Activity in Our Communities.
Prizes will be awarded for the top three papers, with $200 being the top prize. *See below for full details of prizes and restrictions. The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2009.
The Symposium is looking for some great ideas from students, staff and faculty and our community members, to see who can present, in a paper format, the best policy initiative to help stop gang violence, membership and/or activity in our South Carolina communities. The papers need not address all three areas (membership, violence, activity), but can focus on one area, or a combination of areas.
Individuals or groups may submit a paper. ALL are welcome, faculty, staff, students and community members.
PAPER GUIDELINES:
ALL papers must follow these guidelines.
1) 5 Pages Minimum (not including Title page and Bibliography). The policy initiative MUST be for a community in South Carolina.
2) 1 Page Minimum Introduction. Please state who is presenting this policy initiative, i.e.: faculty, staff, student/s, community member/s. The introduction must also state what community is going to be the recipient of this policy initiative, what problem area is being addressed (gang membership, and/or violence, and/or activity). It will also address why you think this/these problem/s are important to you and the community.
3) 2 Pages Minimum on Your Policy. How will it be implemented, who will be responsible for it's implementation, why do you think it will work, how much do you think it will cost to get this policy in motion, and your best estimate on how much it will cost for the first year? Be realistic: if it will cost the community too much then it probably won't be implemented, unless you state where the funds might be coming from (organizations, federal/state agencies, grants etc).
4) 1 page Minimum Documenting your contact with, at least 2 community members/agencies/organizations to discuss your policy and learn what problems are present in the community you will be discussing. Examples: local police, gang investigation units, organizations such as advocacy groups, Urban League etc, community leaders, state/local legislators. These contacts can be calls, emails and not necessarily face to face contact. You must document the persons you have had contact with, their position and the agency/organization/community that they represent.
5) 1 Page Minimum on Your Research on the problem area/s you are addressing. Studies done by local agencies and organizations are permitted. At least 4 research sources needed and a short summary of your research. These sources can be from newspapers, books, journals and magazines and studies on the internet.
