CC Leadership Institute Receives Grant for Education Outreach

Project L.E.A.D. Focuses on Pregnancy Prevention and Empowerment for Young Women

The Leadership Institute has been awarded $50,000 in Certificate of Public Advantage (COPA) grants funds from Palmetto Health for the continuation and/or expansion of the Project L.E.A.D. program.

Project L.E.A.D. is a community-based pregnancy prevention and empowerment program designed for young women (ages 17-22). For 4 weeks during 90-minute sessions, participants have the opportunity to discuss: healthy relationships, STDs, dating violence, contraception, communication, career goals, and leadership. The Leadership Institute has partnered with qualified instructors from Clear Vision Seminars & Consulting to offer Project L.E.A.D.’s intensive public outreach and education program in a variety of settings to make the program as accessible as possible. The instructors encourage peer discussion and provide information the participants need to make empowering choices for long-term success and independence.

“The Leadership Institute at Columbia College has demonstrated creative and committed approaches to improving community health with the Project L.E.A.D. program,” said Stacey McPhail, LMSW, Director of the Palmetto Health Office of Community Services Maternal and Child Health Initiative.

Why It Matters:
Did you know that North Columbia (29203) has the highest number of teen pregnancies in the state and within Richland county? Since 2003, the teen pregnancy numbers have been steadily increasing, and older teens (ages 18-19) represent over 60% of these pregnancies. Of the pregnant older teens in the area, only 56% have graduated from high school or enrolled in a post-high school program. Statistically, pregnant teens are less likely to graduate from high school or enroll in college. They are also more likely to become victims of poverty.
