The Goodall Gallery at Columbia College kicks off its 2010-2011 season with a group exhibition entitled, Points of Departure: A Printmaking Invitational, featuring eleven printmakers with various ties to South Carolina or who are currently based in the state: Sigmund Abeles, Sydney A. Cross, Barabara Duval, Claire K. Farrell, Phillip Garrett, Terry K. Hunter, Treelee MacAnn, Stephen Nevitt, Mary Robinson, Boyd Saunders, and Tom Seawell. The exhibition will open Monday, September 6 and run through Sunday, October 17 with an artists’ reception on Friday, September 24 from 5:30 to 7pm in the Goodall Gallery.

For studio artists who produce consistently over an extended number of years, specific works seem to stand out as pivotal ones in their overall artistic development. The manner in which these are important varies from artist to artist. Works may reflect a new direction in terms of technique, a significant shift in conceptual framework, documentation of an important passage in the artist’s personal life, a change in vantage point for personal expression, a significant capstone experience in the development of a long-standing series of works, or other meaningful matters. This exhibition was developed with a number of criteria in mind. It includes artists with strong South Carolina connections whose work reflects ongoing involvement as active printmakers throughout their careers. Each artist was asked to submit works which represent a signifcant point or passage in the development of their oeuvre. Included are written statements for many works with a description of each print’s importance. This feedback will provide the audience, especially students, the opportunity to observe the prints from
a unique perspective.

The Columbia College Goodall Gallery is located in the Spears Music and Art Center in downtown Columbia on North Main Street, 1301 Columbia College Drive. Gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 am to 6 pm, Thursday and Friday, 10 am to 6pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.
