Welcome to Columbia College
Religious Life

Columbia College has a long-standing tradition of emphasizing spiritual values as a part of the total educational experience. While affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the college welcomes people of all faith traditions.

The Rev. Carl King serves the college as Chaplain and is part of the Student Affairs staff. The main responsibility of the Chaplain is to minister to students, focusing on the particular needs that emerge at the college level. The Chaplain is available to students for pastoral counseling, support and guidance.

In addition to providing pastoral care, the Chaplain works with student groups, faculty and staff to develop and implement a variety of opportunities for spiritual growth. Programs strive to be creative, diverse and ecumenical, including study experiences, interfaith dialogues, retreats, mission projects, and special conferences.

While the College and the Chaplain belong to a particular United Methodist tradition, both respect the traditions of students, faculty and staff who are neither United Methodist nor Christian. Under the guidance of the Chaplain, Columbia College strives to be a community that respects religious diversity and difference, including all Christian denominations and major religious faiths.

Chapel Services

Weekly chapel, held each Wednesday at 1 p.m. in College Place United Methodist Church, is designed to foster spiritual growth in students.

Chapel participation policy requires students to earn a minimum number of points for chapel attendance. However, many students attend chapel beyond the requirement to enjoy the lively and creative worship. Many weekly chapels are led by students.

Praise and Worship

Students serve as the musicians and the worship leaders. A Praise and Worship Team offers a variety of musical selections once a month while a Praise Band leads the worship during the other Chapel Services. Once a month, chapel service follows a Praise and Worship format in an African-American tradition

Prayer Chapels
A small chapel is available on campus for quiet reflection and prayer. The Chapel of St. Thomas is located in the basement of Wesley and is open to students 24 hours a day.
